We focused on reusing discarded publicity banners to develop personal journals and wallets.
A massive number of PVC-based banners are still being used and routinely discarded in landfills. We experimented with die cutting, but it destroyed the edges. Screen printing needed hard chemicals – a minus on health and security. Thus, we started teaching art fundamentals to the inmates so they could take the banners and cut them manually, framing the best compositions.
A 'sandwich' with banners and chicken wire made it possible for the material to be manipulated in several shapes. The playfulness and the lack of iconography shortened the distance between the pre-conceived perception and the object.
